Monday January ( 7th)- Returned to school - owing to the bad state of the roads no children came all the week.

Monday ( 14th ) - Admitted one boy - numbers very fair - roads still bad from the snow.

Tuesday - Several children absent through illness.

Wednesday- Rev. Helme visited school today.

Thursday }  Only 5 children came today heavy fall of snow.
Friday   }

Monday 21st- Sharp frost - so cold in school children could not write in their copy books.

Tuesday 22nd- Weather still very severe - numbers fair.

Wednesday 23rd- Rev. R. Helme visited today - received notice of Pupil Teacher's Exam: Feb. 2nd.

Thursday 24th- Market day - several children left at half past three o'clock.

Friday 25th - Rev. R. Helme visited school today.

Friday 1st February- Very wet and damp morning - Rev. R. Helme visited in the afternoon.

Monday 4th- Ellen Newberry went to Watford on Saturday to be examined - numbers fair.

Tuesday 5th- Rev. R. Helme visited school today - very wet - numbers smaller in consequence.

Wednesday 6th- Miss Nina visited for a short time - 3rd class improving in writing.

Wednesday 27th- Children had their Annual Tea this afternoon - parents came in the evening to hear children sing and to see them receive prizes for attendance.

Thursday 28th- Being market day several children had leave.  Miss Nina visited.

Friday March 1st- Rev. R. Helme visited - attendance much better this week.

Monday 3rd- Rev.R.Helme visited to take club - several children absent with chilled feet.

Tuesday 4th- Miss Kate came in fro a few minutes.

Wednesday 5th- Being Ash Wednesday - took upper classes to the morning service.

Tuesday 7th- Miss Nina came in the afternoon to take girls for needlework.

Wednesday 8th- The same - numbers very good during this week.

Thursday 9th- Market day - numbers better than usual.

Friday 10th- School visited by Rev. R. Helme in morning - having no one to assist me in school was obliged to take lessons all day - no needlework - 79 children.

Tuesday 14th- Miss Key took girls in the afternoon - more children present this week than in any previous week since opening of school.

Wednesday 15th- Miss Kate came in until half past three to take needlework - numbers good.

Thursday 16th- Being Market day several children have leave - Miss Key took girls.

Friday 17th- Average for week 79.4 - Miss Kate took girls for needlework.

Monday 19th- Rev. R. Helme visited school in the morning. 80 children present - Miss Key assisted  with needlework in the afternoon.

Tuesday 20th- Very wet all day - several children away in consequence - Miss Kate visited.

Wednesday 21st- Still wet and cold - snow during the day - Miss Key took needlework.

Thursday 22nd- Being market day - several children have leave - school visited by Misses.........

....Key and Cooper in afternoon heard the children sing - also Rev. R. Helme.

Friday 23rd- Miss A. Miles still absent from school, had monitors from first class to assist during the past three weeks - Rev. R. Helme received letter from M.A.Miles in which she stated that her Father would not allow her to leave him - I also received note stating that her friends were unwilling for her to leave home while her Father lived. - Rev. R. Helme again wrote to M. A. Miles desiring her to return at once, as,if not, he must apply to Rev. C. J. Robinson H.M. Inspector, to recommend him another assistant.

Monday 27th- Rev. R. Helme visited school - received letter from M.M. stating her Father had died on previous Friday - Miss Key assisted with needlework.

Tuesday 28th- Rev. R. Helme visited school - wrote to M.A.Miles desiring her to return immediately after the funeral.

Wednesday 29th- Rev. R. Helme visited school - took girls for lessons in afternoon........

30th- Being Ascension Day took children to church.

Friday 31st- Rev. R. Helme visited school - Mrs. Helme came to assist with needlework - letter received from M.A. Miles to the effect that she would return on Monday June 3rd.  With respect to my entry in log book - Friday 17th - Rev. R. Helme wishes me to state that he gave M.A. Miles permission to remain at home during her father's illness, upon her own representation that he was actually dying when she wrote, and that he recalled that permission from her own subsequent statement that he might live six or seven weeks .

Monday 3rd June- Rev. R. Helme visited school both morning and afternoon - Miss Key assisted with needlework.

Tuesday 4th- M.A.Miles returned to duty in school this morning - after having been away one month - Rev. Helme visited school:Miss Kate assisted.

Wednesday 5th- Rev.R. Helme visited in the morning - no one came to assist with work very wet - numbers in consequence small.

Thursday 6th- Rev. R. Helme visited - no one came to assist with needlework - numbers much better - 5 only had leave to go to market.

Friday 7th- Still wet and showery - but numbers fair.

Monday 10th- Rev. R. Helme visited school to hold club. Numbers rather smaller owing to its being Green Fair Day - Whit Monday.

Tuesday IIth- Numbers much better - Rev. R. Helme visited both morning and afternoon - M.A.Miles left this afternoon in spite of all Mr. Helme and I could do to induce her to remain - on Tuesday 4th Mr. Helme reproved her in my presence for her absence without permission - and also for her letters to me - and she seems to have resented what she calls his ill treatment in recalling her.  There has been a great change in her manner since her return - as she considers I was the cause of the reproof & recall  - and therefore she made up her mind to go which she did without giving us any notice - although Mr. Helme pointed out to her the consequence of her leaving in such a manner.

Wednesday 13th- Rev. R. Helme visited Sch. in morning - Miss Nina came in the afternoon to take girls for needlework.

Friday 14th- Rev. R. Helme visited school - numbers good - 80 children present in morning - Miss Keys came to take girls for needlework.

Monday 17th- Rev. R. Helme visited school - Mrs. Helme came to needlework - numbers very good 83 - several boys have leave for haymaking.

Tuesday 18th- School visited by Rev. & Mrs. Frampton who examined the children in arithmetic, reading etc. & expressed themselves very pleased with the order of children.

Wednesday 19th- Rev. R. Helme visited school in morning.  Miss Key came to assist with needlework.

Thursday 20th- Market day  - Rev. R. Helme came in the morning - Mrs. Helme came to assist with needlework.

Friday 21st- Mrs. Frampton came to bid the children goodbye previous to her going away......

Wednesday 26th- Miss Key came to assist with needlework. Rev. R. Helme came in the afternoon.

Thursday 27th- Being Market Day several children have leave to go to market - no one came in the afternoon to assist with work - took children for an hour into Mrs. Cooper's Meadow.

Friday 28th- Numbers rather smaller this week - owing to many of the children going bird - keeping.  Mrs. Helme came to assist with needlework.

Monday 1st July- Rev. R. Helme visited school - several children returned who have been to work - Miss Nina came.

Tuesday 2nd- Very wet to day.  Miss Kate came to assist with needlework.

Wednesday 3rd - Raining all day - no children came in the morning - few came in the afternoon.

Wednesday 6th- Examined second class in reading - numbers very fair.

Friday 8th- Abel Dickinson, who was at school last week, died this morning - after being ill only a few days - inflamation - numbers in school much better this week - 68 average.

Tuesday 17th- Weather being finer several children returned today, no one visited.

Wednesday 18th- Rev. R. Helme visited in morning - kept school entirely in large room - holly decoration going on in the Infant Room.

Thursday 19th- Market day - Mrs. Helme visited in the morning - closed school at 4 0'clock for Xmas Holidays.  Emily Troubridge has left not liking teaching  - B. Aaroley who has been here a fortnight is to return on trial.

....a most pleasant evenings enjoyment - all joined in Singing Hymn 17 - when they were dismissed to their homes by the Rev. R. Helme - 260 having partaken of the tea provided for them.

N.B. Education in the19th Century.  Most early Victorian Schools were set up by religious groups.  The most prominant being the National Society which was run by the Church of England. The National Society had a code of regulations and employed "Her Majesties Inspectors" Leverstock Green schol was a National Society School.  Full state control of education was only established by the Elementary Eduation Act of 1870, and was not made compulsory until 1880.  From 1880 A charge was levied for each pupil until 1891 when elementary education became free; 2d a week for each child until 1876 when it was then reduced to 1d.
